Before diving into the beer-soaked bar crawl, let’s rewind a little. Oktoberfest started back in 1810 in Munich to celebrate the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Bavaria. Traditional Bavarian grub? Check. Rowdy beer halls? Hell yes. Lakeside beer-busting blowouts? Obviously. Plus venues where the DJ spins techno beats till sunrise.
This is where we always start—right in the heart of Mitte. This spot nails the Bavarian beer hall vibe with tall ceilings, live brass bands, and big-ass steins sloshing with Hofbräu beer. You get the full blown beerhall experience without hopping on a train to Munich.
One hilarious war story: I bombed the “Ein Prosit” toast so hard I almost drenched the dude next to me in foam—luckily he was a good sport. Billie still teases me about it, saying that’s how you break the ice in any German beerhall.

For mad carnival vibes and massive tents, Zitadelle Spandau’s your jam. There are rides, pork knuckles piled high, and festive singing contests where Billie claims the roasted pigs outshine even her Thanksgiving spread. I’m just thankful my belt survived the feast.

Alexanderplatz turns into an authentic Bavarian beer festival from September through October, where “Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit” ("A toast, a toast to coziness and good cheer") truly comes alive. This event serves up the full Festzelt atmosphere with live music, a beer garden, a Gaudi-Stube (party room), and plenty of classic Bavarian specialties—think crispy Haxn (pork knuckle), soft Brez’n (pretzels), and juicy Schweinsbraten (roast pork).
If you’re feeling bold, don’t miss the daily Dirndl competition, where the most dazzling dirndl dresses compete for the crown every evening. It’s a pulsating party right in Mitte at Berlin’s iconic Alexanderplatz.
